‘Gatsby in Connecticut: The Untold Origin Story’ Webinar By The NY Adventure Club
The New York Adventure Club is organizing an exciting webinar on ‘Gatsby in Connecticut: The Untold Origin Story’ on January 14, 2021, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
The virtual event will be led by Robert Steven Williams, the Director of ‘Gatsby in Connecticut: The Untold Origin Story. It is an award-winning documentary selected as one of 2020’s best films by The New Yorker and has won awards at numerous film festivals, including Sundance.
The documentary is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece: The Great Gatsby. It argues that Fitzgerald’s inspiration for the classic novel came not from his time spent on Long Island’s Gold Coast, but rather, from one wild summer in Connecticut. Many scholars have also claimed that F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald spent the summer of 1920 in Westport, Connecticut.
The upcoming webinar will include a conversation with the director as well as the following:
a. The story behind how Scott met Zelda in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1917
b. Scott’s early years in New York City, from his failed attempt to make it in advertising, to heading back to his parents’ home in Saint Paul, to his triumphant NYC return and publication of his first novel, This Side of Paradise
c. An overview of Westport, Connecticut in the 1920s, where illegal booze flowed freely, and the local beaches hosted scandalous affairs
d. How Williams’ groundbreaking research enabled his production team to uncover secrets of Fitzgerald unbeknownst to the Gatsby scholarly community and town of Westport
e. Exclusive video clips from Gatsby in Connecticut, as well as archival footage that didn’t make the film
f. Never-before-seen photos of Westport and New York from the 1920s
This virtual event is open to the public and will be attended by members of the Westport Historical Society and Westport Library. We are also looking forward to attending this event!
